Description
This is a Non-Smoking Apartment:
History and modern comforts converge perfectly in this spacious two-bedroom, two-bathroom Paris apartment. Centrally located in the Marais by the wonderful “foodie” street, rue Rambuteau, and steps from the famed Centre Pompidou, this art-filled vacation rental and its creative and historical surroundings will inspire and delight those seeking the best food and culture that Paris has to offer.

Located on the first floor French (US second floor), with elevator, in a building with 6 floors, the apartment’s stylish entryway directs to the Primary suite, complete with a King-size bed (180 x 200 cm) and ensuite bathroom. This Primary bedroom overlooks the tiny street ‘Impasse Berthaud’ and its windows are double-glazed to ensure quiet. The hallway to the right of the apartment’s entryway leads to the second bedroom and bathroom. This bedroom has a Queen-size bed ( 160 x 180 cm) that can also be made-up (in advance) into two twin beds. This bedroom overlooks the building’s internal courtyard and again the windows are double-glazed to ensure quiet. This same hallway leads to the large, south-facing living room, dining room and kitchen. The elegant living room has three sets of beautiful French doors with small Juliette balconies overlooking the famous market street rue Rambuteau. The French doors are double-glazed to ensure quiet. The fully-equipped, modern kitchen, with its full-sized refrigerator, plate warmer, Nespresso machine with milk frother, and more, provides everything needed for both casual dining and more sophisticated entertaining.

The apartment is fully heated (including the bathroom and entryway floors) and has air-conditioning throughout. The modern artwork in the apartment is mostly by Australian contemporary artists. Most of the furniture in the apartment has been collected over time. Much of it was purchased from auction houses and Paris’ antique market at Porte de Clignancourt.

The rear of the apartment overlooks the Jardin Anne Frank, which opened in 2007. The garden is at the rear of the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire du Judaïsme. Visible from the windows of the rear bedroom is a chestnut tree planted from a clipping taken from the tree of which Anne Frank wrote in her famous diary.

In 1839, the building was acquired by Gertrude de Scott d’Anneville, widow of one of the original Mousquetaires du Roi (King’s Musketeers) and owner of the Chateau du Plessis in Bouquelon. In the late 1800s, ownership passed to Eugenie Juliette Sieyes, the Countess of Laubsepin and widow of Léonel Antoine de Mouchet Battefort. The Count of Laubespin was a decorated military hero and three-term Senator in the Third Republic. The building was divided into apartments in 1952.

The apartment is in the center of Paris’ most historic district, the Marais, with its oldest surviving properties dating back to the 13th century. The Marais became the favored locale for Paris’ aristocracy in the 16th century. Most of the finest buildings in the quartier, including many magnificent hôtels particuliers, were built in the 16th and 17th centuries.

The pivotal event of the French Revolution occurred in the Marais, on 14 July 1789, with the storming of the Bastille (2km/1.2 miles east of the apartment). The quartier fell on hard times after the Revolution as most of the nobility left.

In the late 20th century, the Marais came back into fashion. It is now an artistic hub and the heart of Paris’ Jewish and LGBT communities, with a seemingly endless number of amazing museums, galleries, shops, cafés, restaurants and bars, all of which are easily accessible by foot. It is the perfect spot for exploring the rest of Paris, thanks to its central location and easy transport connections.
